Ambient cooling is based on the principle of evaporative cooling. In this method, the pottery made of clay is turned upside down and placed against the wall in a beehive shape.

Naturally, water in clay pots is cold. Using that idea, recycled water is poured over the terracotta pots. After that, as the water evaporates inside the terracotta, the surrounding environment becomes cooler. BBC.

Manisha Siripurapur, an architect from Delhi-based ‘Ant Studio’ firm, came up with the novel technique of keeping the environment cool with clay pots. In 2014, his client ran into a problem.

A diesel generator in their compound was pumping superheated air between the two buildings. As a result, the heat emitted from it became unbearable for the workers inside.

At that time, many people develop physical complications, including headaches and nausea. That’s when the idea of ​​working with terracotta came to Manisha’s mind. He said, ‘I thought that water cools naturally in clay pots.

Because that water evaporates a little and absorbs the heat of the pot. But what if I reverse that process?

Then it came to mind that the surrounding air can be cooled by this process. 800-900 terracotta cones were made for this process.

It was then arranged like a beehive. The vessels were stacked in such a way that the surrounding surface was evenly cooled. Since the first installation of these beehives,

the company has built 35 cooling towers in schools, public spaces, airports and commercial buildings across the country from Pune to Jaipur.

Currently they are also experimenting with honeycomb designs, which stack terracotta in different shapes.

They even want to come up with a process that doesn’t require water at all. The researchers then also experimented with terracotta cooling prototypes.

Then mechanical engineering students from Maharashtra, India developed a terracotta air conditioner using this process. In which a fan was used to blow air over the wet terracotta.

Manisha Siripurapour strongly believes that architects can play an important role in the fight against climate change and that they need to make a concerted effort to create a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
